JOHN WHITE ROUNDY a son of Elijah White Roundy, was born in Marblehead, Mass., November 2, 1809. He pursued his preparatory studies at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. He left college in the Junior year, and resided in Marblehead, until the autumn of 1828, when he removed to Utica, N. Y., where he studied law with Wm. H. Tracy, Esq., and was admitted to the bar. He practised his profession, one year in Manlius, N. Y.; then returned to Utica, studied theology, and was licensed to preach; but, owing to a pulmonary difficulty, did not seek a settlement in the ministry. He was subsequently engaged in mercantile pursuits,--two years in Charleston, S. C., and six years in La Fayette, Ind., whence he removed to Brooklyn, N. Y., where he now resides, making New York City his place of business.
He was married, August, 1832, to Miss Adaline S. Hoyt, of Utica, N. Y. He has had eight children ; of whom, Mary Hoyt, Gertrude, and Elizabeth Holmes, are living.
