GEORGE PAINE was born in Williamstown, Vt., January 2, 1807. His father, Hon. Elijah Paine, a Judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont, and a Senator in the United States Congress, died in 1842.
He was prepared for college at Phillips Exeter Academy. After graduating, he studied law with Hon. Joseph Bell, at Haverhill, N. H. After his admission to the bar, he removed to Providence, R. I., and, in 1833, became the editor and a proprietor of the Providence Journal. In May, 1836, he removed to Massillon, Ohio, where he died, October 2, of the same year, of bilious fever.
"In his domestic relations, in his intercourse with the world, in his frank and manly feelings, and devoted attachment to his friends, he had no superior."-Providence Journal, October 15, 1836.
He married Miss Martha Porter, of Hanover, N. H., and has left two sons.
