ADAMS JEWETT, was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., July 26, 1807. His father, Luther Jewett, M.D. a graduate of Dartmouth in 1795. is stil living in St. Johnsbury. He was prepared for college at Moor's School, Hanover, N. H., under the tuition of Messrs. George
Richardson, and A. F. Putnam.
After graduating, he resided in Alabama, from the fall of 1827, until December, 1833; four years, as private teacher in the vicinity of Claiborne, and in Mobile, and two years, as Professor in Spring Hill College, in the latter city. While at Mobile, he also commenced the study of medicine with Dr. Thomas Casey. From February, 1833, to April, 1838, (with the exception of a short interval passed at Edinburgh, in the autumn of 1837, during which he received a diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons,) he resided in Paris, France, in attendance upon medical lectures, and in observation of hospital practice. After leaving France, he passed five months in England,--mostly in Manchester,--and returned to this country in the autumn of 1838. He commenced practice, the subsequent winter, in Mobile; remained there until the spring of 1842; and then removed to Dayton, Ohio; where he has since continued his profession, in company with his brother, Hibbard Jewett, M. D. While in Paris, Dr. Jewett was two years, Externe to Louis, and
Velpeau.
He was married, in Mobile, July 3, 1841, to Miss Mary P. Smith, a daughter of Moses Smith, Esq., late of Lancaster, Mass. He has had four children;--of whom, Sarah, Henry Smith, and Luther Hibbard, are living.
