ELI FRENCH, A son of Samuel French, was born in Dummerston, Vt., September 8, 1800. He was prepared for college under the tuition of Rev. Hosea Beckley, of Dummerston. He left college at the beginning of the Junior year; taught school in Dover, N. H., until 1828; was afterwards engaged in the book-selling business, in Dover, until February, 1832; and in Philadelphia, Pa., from that date until September, 1833; when he removed to New York city, where he has pursued the same business to the present time. He received the degree of A. B., by examination, with the class of 1828.
He was married, May 26, 1835, to Miss Hannah Ropers Draper, of Dover, N. H. He has had five children;--William Rogers, Hannah Rogers, Samuel Gates, Elizabeth Rogers, and George
Rogers.
