JOHN KENDRICK CONVERSE, a son of Joel Converse, was born in Lyme, N. H., June 15, 1801.
He was prepared for college, principally at the academy in Thetford, Vt., under the tuition of Rev. John Fitch; entered Dartmouth, in 1823; left, in the Junior year; taught school and pursued collegiate studies, in Virginia, until August, 1827, when he graduated at Hampden Sidney College.
During the two subsequent years, he was assistant editor of the " Southern Religious Telegraph," and the
"Literary and Evangelical Magazine", published in Richmond, Va.
He was afterwards a member of the Divinity School at Princeton, N. J., about three years; and became pastor of the First Congregational Church in Burlington, Vt., August 9, 1832.
This charge he resigned in 1844, on account of the failure of his voice ; and he has since been the principal of the Burlington Seminary for Young Ladies.
He has printed several sermons and essays.
He was married, May 21, 1834, to Sarah, a daughter of the late
Hon. Heman Allen, of Burlington, Vt. He has had eight children of whom, Sarah Elizabeth, Julia Allen, Helen C., John Heman, Charles Allen, Francis Kendrick, and Ida Flavia, are living
