BENJAMIN GORDON BALDWIN, a son of Benjamin P. Baldwin, was born in Bradford, Vt., May 13, 1806.
He was prepared for college at the academies in Bradford and Thetford, Vt.
After graduating, be taught the academy in Francestown, N. H., a few months, and then removed to White, Creek, N. Y., where be commenced the study of law, in the office of Judge Jermain. In March, 1828, be removed to Potsdam, N. Y., and completed his legal studies with Horace Allen, Esq. He was admitted to the bar in 1832, and practised his profession, in Potsdam, as partner with Mr. Allen, and Wm. C. Dart, Esq., and, on his
individual account, until 1850, when he took charge of the Potsdam Station of the Ogdensburg Railroad.
This agency he subsequently relinquished, and has since been engaged in improvements calculated to promote the growth of a new village in the vicinity of the Station.
He has twice been elected Surrogate of the County of St. Lawrence, which office he holds at the present time.
He was married, August 2, 1833, to Miss Mary Ann Lanphier, of Alstead, N. H.
She died, October 2, 1835, and he was again married, October 23, 1837, to Miss Emeline Lanphier, a sister of the above.
